As nurse practitioners (NPs), we often find ourselves navigating a complex relationship with collaborating physicians. While collaboration, when needed, is essential for optimal patient care, the requirement for formal collaboration agreements in some states has sparked debate within our profession. Having practiced in a full practice state, I’ve experienced the benefits of voluntary collaboration.
I’m feeling like I want to cry, need a good cry—release, tears of joy, tears of anguish—the yin and the yang of life. It’s OK to cry for both sides, embrace the dark and the light; one supports the other. You are beloved and whole because of it. You feel, you fall, you pick yourself […] The post On Crying first appeared on Donna Cardillo, RN.
Every ten years the American Nurses Association revises the Code of Ethics for Nurses to stay up to date with current trends, challenges and ethical dilemmas facing the nursing profession. Once the panel has gone through the process of meticulously developing the revisions, commenting is opened to the public. The 2025 Revisions to the Code is now open to comments through July 31.
By Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Is it just our health system, or is HR also missing in action in others? I have repeatedly been asked this question over the past year. The beginnings of the problem in most health systems can be traced back to the seismic shifts that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today’s workforce includes multiple generations of employees all looking for something different from their benefits package. While meeting these disparate needs can be challenging, a comprehensive fertility benefit can support everyone from junior staffers learning about their fertility health to senior leadership managing menopause and low testosterone symptoms.
I am grateful for the first reviews of my newest book, Way Home: Journeys Through Homelessness , now available for pre-order. Here are the book’s description and the reviews: Can one city’s solutions to homelessness help the United States face the issue nationally? The United States grapples with a solution for the unhoused by employing a patchwork of uneven rhetoric and policy.
Why would you worry about that as a Nurse Practitioner practice owner? Well, chances are you wouldn’t because you are unaware that the FTC might have an issue with how you market your practice and advertise. Time for a Reality Check… The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) was created in 1914 to prevent unfair competition and deceptive advertising practices that harm consumers.

The rapid proliferation of nurse practitioners programs in the U.S. is spurring concerns about the quality of training for these advanced practice providers and potential consequences for patient safety, Bloomberg Businessweek reported July 24.

There are many reasons, in this year of 2024, for people worldwide to be reflecting on the meaning of freedom. Ongoing wars between nation groups bring into sharp focus the reality of power imbalances that encroach on the freedoms of those with less power.

An estimated 1.1 billion women worldwide will have experienced menopause by 2025. Symptoms like hot flashes, fatigue, and anxiety can be incredibly disruptive — and last for years. But despite its massive impact, little is being done to support those going through menopause in the workplace. In a recent survey, 70% of respondents said they have considered changing their employment to better manage symptoms — perhaps because only 8% received significant support from their employer related to meno
The Supreme Court's decision will impact patients receiving care through Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP. The United States Supreme Court recently overturned the long-standing Chevron deference doctrine, which held that courts should defer to agency interpretations of statutes that fall under the particular agency's purview, when the interpretation is reasonable, and the meaning of a statute is not made explicitly clear by Congress.
The Emergency Nurses Association has recognized 94 emergency departments across the U.S. for their commitment to quality, safety and a healthy work environment.
As an RN with over 29 years of experience—including over 2 decades in emergency departments (EDs)—I’m used to working in chaotic clinical environments, and I rely on rigorous routines and battle-tested protocols to ensure my patients get the best possible care. That makes me a creature of habit and, I’ll admit, an utter skeptic when new ideas, methods, or technologies threaten to disrupt the status quo.

Employee expectations around benefits and workplace support have evolved in step with the growing need for fertility and family-forming care. As HR professionals, it is our job to ensure employees have a comprehensive understanding of the benefits our organizations offer and how they can utilize them. Before educating employees, we first need to understand the rising healthcare costs and the financial burden of fertility care.
By Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Most nurse leaders tell me that they strive to be fair and don’t demonstrate favoritism toward specific staff. However, in a recent Harvard Business Review article, authors Ginka Toegel and Jean-Louis Barsoux argue that this does not happen in the actual workplace. The research, they contend, demonstrates […] The post When Leaders Show Favoritism appeared first on Emerging Nurse Leader.

Black nurses have been left “broken” by the nursing regulator, due to the sheer number of disproportionate referrals and discrimination they face, a protest has heard.
There are many different ways to demonstrate the value of nursing, according to these nurse leaders. What is the value of nursing? It’s an age-old question that circulates throughout C-suite meeting rooms in health systems across the country. And as of now, nursing often does not have a separate line item on many budgets, despite making up a large portion of the healthcare workforce.
Speaker: Julie B. Chavez - VP, Strategy & Alliances at Carrot
As HR and total rewards professionals, we are often seeking opportunities to foster a better sense of community and belonging amongst employees - ensuring that all employees have an equitable opportunity to receive fertility treatments is one of the many ways this can be achieved. Fertility benefits make it possible for employees to access treatments like IVF.
Self-scheduling has emerged as an increasingly popular option for hospitals and health systems to provide nurses with greater flexibility. However, the concept is not entirely new.
Attend a healthcare seminar, and within 5 minutes you’re bound to hear the word silo thrown about like a lasso by the speaker to capture the audience’s attention or to warn the listeners: Vogue words ahead, pay attention! I can’t recall when I first heard the word silo , but I remember consulting the dictionary after I got home (my initial auditory encounter with the agrarian structure for storing grain occurred in the pre-internet era).

Contributor: Michelle Alexandre, MSN, ACNS-BC Nurse practitioner (NP) students are all too often faced with the challenge of securing their clinical preceptors (Doherty et al., 2020). Last year a colleague and owner of an NP preceptor matching company reached out to me offering me substantial monetary compensation to serve as one of their clinical preceptors.
Simulation sessions can help maintain clinician proficiency and prepare staff members to be part of the multidisciplinary team during high-risk procedures that happen suddenly and infrequently. One such situation is an emergency resternotomy in the intensive care unit (ICU) for patients recovering from cardiac surgery who experience cardiac arrest. The surgery involves reopening the patient’s chest after defibrillation did not resuscitate them.
Several hospitals and health systems across the country were awarded $275,000 each for projects designed to elevate and tackle equity issues affecting the nurse workforce.

This revelation has sent ripples through our community, igniting a call to action. We invite nurses, doctors, carers, and members of the public to join us in a powerful protest demanding justice and equality.
By Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Leadership Communication is challenging today. Nursing staff are in cognitive overload, so getting anyone’s attention takes a lot of work. Have you ever applied for a position in academic nursing education, only to find that in addition to your curriculum vitae (CV) and cover letter you also need to provide the prospective employer with your teaching philosophy? Many new applicants for roles in higher education struggle with this task. Most have never written a teaching philosophy before, and an online search for guidance results in little direction specific to nursing.
