The unfortunate truth is that nurses get fired. Not laid off, not transferred – fired. It’s uncomfortable to contemplate and discuss, but nurses need to know what can potentially lead to firing in the current environment. There are many reasons for termination; from unsubstantiated claims to legitimate events. They can include patient errors, HIPAA violations, causing undue risk for an employer, and social media mistakes.

I used to work with a doc who would continuously refer to the Rules of the House of God. This was a novel, written in the 70's. You should go read it, if it's still in print, it's doubtful it would be published in this day and age. For non-jaded health care people, it's dark and full of scurrilous behavior. This doc always used to say that it should be required reading for anyone who works in an ER.

Nurses are the most honored and trusted profession in the United States. A Gallup poll shows that 84% of Americans – four out of every five – rank nurses’ honesty and ethical standards as “high” or “very high”. In fact, nurses have held the number one spot on the list every year for twenty years, with only one exception (in 2001 when firefighters were ranked number one after 9/11).

When you ask if advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) are happy with their career choices, you hear a resounding “yes”. Of course, there are caveats like wanting more time with patients and fewer politics in the workplace, but by and large APRNs are happy with their career and given the chance, would choose it all over again. Medscape conducted a survey recently, of 10,284 nurses that included APRNs.
