Six million Aussies could soon be facing massive out-of-pocket costs at 38 private hospitals, after operator Healthscope tore up agreements with health funds Bupa and members of the Australian Health Services Alliance (AHSA) over a fee dispute. New Jersey will see a 25% shortage in the number of registered nurses to adequately care for its burgeoning older population by 2036, according to an analysis this year by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. In raw numbers, that would be a deficit of 24,450 nurses — ranking New Jersey fourth in the nation in nursing deficit. It comes at the worst possible time for New Jersey, as an exodus of health care workers and an increasingly older population converge to strain the sys

Nurses gave passionate, at times pointed, testimony to lawmakers during a recent committee hearing where Ohio representatives heard more details about a proposed bill on staffing ratios that nurses said could be life-saving. House Bill 285 would set limits on the maximum number of patients a nurse working in a hospital setting would be responsible for, and establish a $20 million forgivable loan program to incentivize people to enter the profession.

Massachusetts has taken a big step when it comes to addressing the nursing shortage in the state, but some people say it still won’t solve current staffing problems. On Wednesday, Gov. Maura Healey signed the state’s economic development bill, which included a measure to join the Nurse Licensure Compact. The agreement allows nurses to practice in other NLC-participating states — in person or via telehealth — without having to obtain a new license for that location.

Most travel nurses have adventurous spirits. We love going to new places, meeting new people, and having new experiences, and we will happily spend months upon months on assignments. Yet, most of us still enjoy the feeling of coming back home — unless that home is in severe disarray. Leaving a home unoccupied for months on end comes with risks. Homes require constant maintenance to keep safe and sound; neglected houses quickly become derelict.

Many of us were encouraged to eat healthy foods from a young age, but following this advice can be challenging. With Thanksgiving approaching, it becomes even harder to maintain balanced meals when friends, family, and even our patients offer us a slice of dessert as a gesture of appreciation. While completely ignoring sweets and carbs may not be the answer, practicing mindful eating habits, like savoring our food and showing compassion when we overeat, can boost nurses’ self-esteem during

Many nurses love nursing because of the multitude of career choices that it offers. Although the myth persists that hospital nursing is the only “real” nursing out there, most of us now recognize that it doesn’t matter where someone works or what they do — if they have a nursing license and see themselves as a nurse, they’re indeed a nurse.

An estimated 1.1 billion women worldwide will have experienced menopause by 2025. Symptoms like hot flashes, fatigue, and anxiety can be incredibly disruptive — and last for years. But despite its massive impact, little is being done to support those going through menopause in the workplace. In a recent survey, 70% of respondents said they have considered changing their employment to better manage symptoms — perhaps because only 8% received significant support from their employer related to meno

Finally, some positive news in emergency preparedness for schools: Maryland’s new active shooter drill guidelines , set to take effect in the 2025 school year, mark a significant shift towards prioritizing student mental health while maintaining effective emergency readiness. As a school nurse who has long advocated for such changes, I’m heartened to see this growing recognition of the emotional toll that traditional emergency drills can impose on our students.

Jennifer Power , La Trobe University Globally, the rates of common sexually transmissible infections (STIs) are increasing among people aged over 50. In some cases, rates are rising faster than among younger people. Recent data from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that, among people aged 55 and older, rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia, two of the most common STIs, more than doubled between 2012 and 2022.

Employee expectations around benefits and workplace support have evolved in step with the growing need for fertility and family-forming care. As HR professionals, it is our job to ensure employees have a comprehensive understanding of the benefits our organizations offer and how they can utilize them. Before educating employees, we first need to understand the rising healthcare costs and the financial burden of fertility care.
