They found that 1/3 of surveyed physicians and nurses planned to reduce work hours within a year, and approximately 40% of nurses planned to leave their current jobs within two years [3]. Nurses who are leaving the bedside aren’t retirement age. Nursing college programs and their resources are finite.

It’s clear that the state of the nursing shortage is at a crisis level. As an experienced bedside nurse, a recent nursing psychiatric/mental health graduate student, and a clinical adjunct faculty instructor, I have a strong opinion about what must be done. First and foremost, nurses require better pay.

What the NCSBN and other nursing workforce studies don’t report is what became of the ex-nurses. If they didn’t retire, what careers did they transition into? Or, did they simply move away from the toxic bedside and take on less stressful jobs? Ultimately, a benevolent nurse completes the great mandala of nursing.

The AACN said in its 2021–2022 Enrollment and Graduations in Baccalaureate and Graduate Programs in Nursing report that 91,938 qualified applications to U.S. nursing schools were turned away in 2021. The causes included insufficient numbers of nurse faculty, clinical sites, classroom space, clinical preceptors , and budget constraints.
