Introduction In 2016, Maryland became one of the first states to implement a Healthcare Preceptor Tax Credit. The aim of this legislation was to help alleviate healthcare workforce shortages in the State, and it provided a tax incentive to nurse practitioner student preceptors. Rasheed et al, 2020).

Unlike doctors, they don't have access to federal funding to support that training, and their schools often leave them to find their own clinical preceptors. Like medical doctors, they need to complete clinical rotations to graduate. The stakes are high. And if they can't get the hours, their graduation will be delayed.

Heuston recommended implementing preceptors and training to support new nurses, while also focusing on making sure that the tenured nurses doing the training are recognized. Within the program, nurses can move up a level and get extra compensation added to their base salary for preceptoring and mentoring.
